Iggy Pop has been named as the executive producer of an immersive documentary about punk music.

The punk genre has one of the most interesting and storied histories of any musical genre, and stretches back further than you’d think.

While bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols were blazing their own trail in the late ’70s, bands like Suicide had used the “punk music” phrase for years, and bands like The Stooges had planted the seeds of the genre since the late ’60s.

So if you were ever going to learn about this fabled style of music, what better way than to watch a documentary produced by one of the genre’s icons?

As The Independent reports, ‘the godfather of punk’, Iggy Pop, has been named as the executive producer for Punk, a new documentary that is set to premiere next March.

Delivered as a four-part series, it plans to tell the “quintessential story of punk”, while delving deep into the archives for some amazing photos and video, and will feature a “crackling soundtrack of punk hits and misses”.

Punk is also set to feature contributions from some of biggest names in music, including the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten, the Ramones’ Marky Ramone, MC5’s Wayne Kramer, the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl, the Dead Kennedys’ Jello Biafra, as well as members of Blondie, Guns N’ Roses, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Punk explores the music, the fashion, the art and the DIY attitude of a subculture of self-described misfits and outcasts,” explained EPIX, the network behind the documentary. “Featuring original interviews with America’s punk pioneers and the U.K.’s most notorious bands.”

“Exploring and reliving the history of punk has been an absolute labour of love for me,” echoed fashion designer John Varvatos. “Punk’s ability to transcend generations in its culture, music, and style is a story that needs to be told.  So… Hey Ho Let’s Go!!”

In related news, Iggy Pop is set to return to Australia in 2019 when he performs at the 30th edition of Bluesfest. Of course, the eternally-shirtless rocker is also set to perform a few sideshows while he’s here, announcing headline dates in both Melbourne and Sydney.
